BIOS
As an urban and economic geographer, my research explores how the space above ground — as property, atmosphere, and the built volume of the city — becomes an object of governance, finance, and collective claim. Drawing on ethnographic and comparative methods across Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Manila, and on earlier experience in urban grassroots organising across Asia, I work across three interrelated research streams.
The first examines air rights as a fiscal and planning instrument: how municipalities convert vertical urban space into revenue, finance transit-oriented development, and how these instruments are differentially deployed across cities in northern Taiwan. The second, developed through the ERC-funded Density Assemblages project at Durham University, addresses density, habitability, and pandemic urbanism — arguing for density as a lived and unevenly produced condition rather than a planning metric. The third extends this inquiry into elemental and energy geographies: in collaboration with anthropologists and indigenous studies scholars, I work on the geothermal fields of Taitung, asking how elements that resist enclosure — air, heat, the subsurface — are drawn into property regimes and energy orders. More recently, I have been examining how the current wave of AI infrastructure expansion is remaking peri-urban East Asia, with fieldwork in southern Taiwan's science-park corridors and comparative cases in Japan and South Korea.
I serve on the Advisory Board of East Asian Science, Technology and Society: An International Journal (EASTS) and am volume editor for the Springer Nature the Handbook of Critical Respiratory Studies (Górska & Škof, eds.).
Prior to joining NTU in 2026, I was Associate Professor at the International College of Innovation, National Chengchi University (2021–2026), and Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Geography, Durham University (2018–2021), where I also completed my PhD.
If any of the above themes and approaches resonates with your own interests, please do get in touch.
