BIOS
Dr. Shiuh-Shen CHIEN obtained his PhD degree from London School of Economics and Political Science, and now is a professor in geography, environment and development studies co-hired by Department of Geography and International Program of Climate Change and Sustainable Development, National Taiwan University. His research interests have covered: global south and international development, policy learning and mobility, political economy of local and regional development, critical smart eco urbanism, volume geography, and geoengineering in the Anthropocene context.
Dr. CHIEN’s publications can be seen in major journals of geography, urban studies, planning and development, and area studies like: Asian Survey, Asian Journal of Political Science, Area Development and Policy, Built Environment, China Information, Cross Currents: East Asian History and Cultural Review, Environment and Planning C: Politics and Space, Environment and Planning D: Nature and Space, Geoforum, Global Networks: A Journal of Transnational Affairs, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, the International Encyclopedia of Geography, Issues and Studies, Land Use Policy, Political Geography, Urban Studies, and Regional Studies. In addition, his book chapters can be seen in a series published by Ashgate, Palgrave, Routledge, Society and Space, and World Scientific.
Dr. Chien adopts a macro political economy theoretical understanding with the “field sciences” methodological approach (rather than model or lab sciences) to conduct geography, environment and development studies. His research projects used to be focusing on post-socialist China urban change and its related Chinese Communist Party-State political mechanism. In recent years, his academic attention has extended to environment and sustainability in a border sense. Two dimensions are particularly highlighted. First, Dr. Chien has engaged with so-called volumetric thinking (not area but three-dimensional) for better humanities and social sciences’ understanding on earth system dynamics, for example, human-atmosphere, human-ocean, and human-geology interactions. His published and under-reviewed papers have included weather modification offices in China, volumetric sovereignty and bordering between China and Taiwan/ Hong Kong, the elemental thoughts of the earth from subterranean explosion in Kaohsiung Taiwan, the fluid volume thinking behind air pollution politics of urban Taiwan.
Second, Dr. Chien has also promoted Taiwan’s new role in international development of the global south in general, and that in relation to 2030 United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals in particular. He figures out that there is a newly developed phenomenon of Taiwan’s aid since the 2010s, namely, from bilateral to multilateral cooperation, from technical to humanitarian assistance, from diplomatic to non-diplomatic alliance, and from pure state-driven to non-driven agents involved. He has conducted related empirical research in Asia Pacific (Kiribati, Tuvalu, Marshall Islands), South Asia (India), Africa (Eswatini), Caribbean Islands (Saint Lucia), Middle East (Jordan), and Inner Eurasia (Kyrgyzstan), all of which have various international development projects by Taiwan’s ODA (official development aid), Taiwan NGO aid, Taiwan citizen aid, and Taiwan enterprises’ development and charity activities.
Dr. Chien is also an academic advisor to Taiwan Alliance of International Development, a civic association advocating concepts of international development and cooperation from a view point of non-government-organizations. He is also an academic advisor to Taiwan Foundation of Children and Families, a Taiwan NGO in international social works specifying on childcare with seven overseas offices in Vietnam, Philippine, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Eswatini, Mongolia, Cambodia. His interviews and commentary essays also can be seen in some printed magazines and digital media.
Dr. Chien received Da-you Wu Memorial Award of National Science Council of Taiwan (2010), Academia Sinica Research Award for Junior Research Investigators (2013), Emerging Scholar Award of Regional Development and Planning of the American Association of Geographer (2013), and Outstanding Research Award of Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan (2019).
