[演講公告]Indoor cartography: an overview of the state of indoor mapping

Thursday, November 22, 2018, 10:30 - 12:00
Location Room 202, the Geography Department Building, NTU
講者: Jorge Chen, Ph.D., P.E. Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Geography University of California, Santa Barbara
演講大綱:

When we think of maps, we often think of the outdoors in terms of geographic information systems (GIS), the maps on our smartphones, or vehicle navigation systems. But what about indoors? After all, space is universal and does not discriminate between indoors, outdoors, or anything in between. As indoor positioning, location based services (LBS), and smart cities shift their focus to indoor environments where people spend over 80% of their daily lives, maps will play a central role in these new capabilities and cartography will help make those maps more relevant and effective. This presentation will provide an overview of the emerging role of cartography in the production, use, and study of those indoor maps and discuss how it challenges traditional notions of cartography. Topics covered will include a survey of past, present, and emerging forms of indoor maps; fundamental concepts for indoor cartography, including the idea of quasi-indoor/outdoor spaces; a discussion of enabling technologies and techniques; and visions for where indoor cartography is heading. This is an exciting time for cartography and GIS as maps move to the 3D city level and will soon head into the next frontier of the Great Indoors.

講者簡介:

Jorge Chen is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His current research centers on the automatic generation of 3D indoor maps from point clouds, which combines his interest in cartography with past work experience in infrastructure design, construction, and management as a civil engineer. Prior to returning to school for his doctorate, he worked as a civil engineer in federal and municipal governments and as a Civil Engineer Officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, deploying to both Iraq and Afghanistan to support Army combat engineering operations. He is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer and received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of California, Santa Barbara, M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, and B.S. in Civil Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy.
